Our Trail Projects: Building Connections Across Vermillion County
The Vermillion Trails Alliance is working to create safe, scenic, and sustainable trails that connect communities and celebrate our county’s natural and historic landscapes. Two priority projects are currently underway:
-
B&O Trail in Vermillion County: Montezuma’s Scenic Bridge and Future Trail
The B&O Trail in Vermillion County, Indiana, is a developing section of a much larger rails-to-trails project that will eventually stretch from Indianapolis to the active CSX railroad in Hillsdale, Indiana. While portions near Indianapolis are already paved and popular with hikers and cyclists, Vermillion County’s stretch is the terminus of the B&O Trail. While the B&O Trail may end at Hillsdale, construction is underway to extend the trail to a public railroad crossing to access county roads with little traffic. Over time, the gap in the trail in Hendricks, Putman, and Parke counties will fill in. But one feature stands tall as a highlight of the region: the historic Montezuma B&O Walking Bridge.
Montezuma B&O Walking Bridge: A Destination on the Wabash River
Access to the Vermillion County portion of the B&O Trail is the pedestrian bridge in Montezuma. Once part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, this 850-foot bridge now provides a safe and scenic way to cross the Wabash River, linking Hillsdale in Vermillion County with neighboring Parke County.
Upgraded with a concrete walking surface and wooden handrails, the Montezuma B&O Walking
Bridge is ideal for:
● Walking and running
● Biking across the Wabash River
● Enjoying river views and local wildlife
● Providing a key component for the visionary tri-county loop that would continue through Vermillion County, across Vigo County, and connect to Parke County’s growing trail system
For locals and visitors alike, it has quickly become one of the best things to do in Vermillion/Parke Counties in Indiana for outdoor recreation. Undeveloped Rail Corridor:
Future Trail Opportunities
Beyond the bridge, the B&O rail corridor in Vermillion County is developed for about .75 miles. This former railroad bed stretches westward from Montezuma to Hillsdale. The Vermillion Trails Alliance (VTA), the B&O Trail Association, the Speedway Trails Association, and Hoosier Rails to Trails envision a future where this corridor becomes a continuous multi-use trail for biking, hiking, and family recreation.
This vision promises:
● Safe, car-free pathways for walking and cycling
● Expanded tourism opportunities for Vermillion County
● A direct connection from central Indiana trails to Vermillion County
● New ways to explore nature, small towns, and the Wabash Valley
Part of a Larger Rails-to-Trails Vision
The B&O Trail in Indiana is one of the state’s most exciting rail-to-trail conversions. Built on the historic Baltimore & Ohio Railroad line, the whole trail will eventually connect Indianapolis to Hillsdale and beyond.
Across Indiana, rail-to-trail projects have become popular destinations for:
● Cyclists looking for long-distance rides
● Families seeking safe places to walk and play
● Tourists exploring small towns and local history
● Outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience Indiana’s natural beauty
The Montezuma bridge is a key link in this larger vision, ensuring that Vermillion County has a central role in one of Indiana’s most crucial trail networks.
Plan Your Visit
Visitors can easily access the Montezuma B&O Walking Bridge. Parking is available nearby, making it a convenient stop for a quick walk, a family outing, or a scenic photo opportunity over the Wabash River.
Quick Facts:
● Location: Montezuma, Indiana
● Length: 850 feet
● Surface: Concrete with wooden handrails
● Trail status: Bridge open to the public; westward corridor completed for .75 miles.
Whether you’re a local resident, a history buff, or a visitor exploring Indiana’s covered bridge country and Wabash Valley trails, the Montezuma B&O Walking Bridge is a must-see.
